Pure White Painted Dresser

Way back in November when we were in the thick of trying to get Loblolly Manor ready for Thanksgiving, my aunts found a nine-drawer dresser for me. They’re always really good to pick up things they think my customers will like or to call me when they find something that “suits my style.” I can’t tell you how many times they’ve saved me when I needed an emergency piece for the booth.

Since I was coming home for Thanksgiving anyway they agreed to store the dresser and I picked it up that weekend. It was so late when we loaded it up after a family bonfire one night, I didn’t even to get a good look at the dresser. So, you can imagine my giggles when I got it home.

Apparently the previous owner likes to organize as much as I do.

Sure, the dresser was a pale yellow and some of the drawers needed to be shored up but I knew my customers would love all of the drawers for storage.

Check out the bamboo inspired accent trim.

If you ever come across a finish like the top of this dresser that looks and feels slick, you need to take the extra time to sand it a bit. This helps give the piece some tooth and allows the paint to adhere better. I used 120-grit sandpaper on the entire piece.

Two coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White and one coat of furniture paste wax later the pale yellow dresser had been given a fresh look.

I decided to keep all of the original hardware in tact because it was in good shape.

I love these layers of textures too.

It might not look like it but this dresser is crazy heavy. I can’t wait to find out who takes it home.

A special thank you to my aunts for looking out for me and for loving and supporting this dream of mine. You guys are the best!

See you guys back here tomorrow. I’m sharing my latest finds from the treasure trail.

Many blessings,

CoCo

  1. I hate using the Annie Sloan paint because I never seem to get the wax right. What’s the secret?

    1. Brian, I hear this a lot so please know that you’re in good company. The biggest secret to wax is to have a good paint foundation. When I’m using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint I almost always thin it out with water just a little (think pancake batter not crepe batter). After the paint has dried on the piece completely, I sand with a 220-grit sandpaper to make sure the paint finish is smooth. Next, use a brush or cloth to make sure you’ve gotten any dust or grit off the piece of furniture. Then make sure you’re using a good quality paste wax. On warm days, I allow the wax to heat in the sun just a little to make it more pliable. Then I use a white, lint free cloth to apply the wax. You want just enough wax to coat the piece of furniture well, so don’t be heavy handed, you can always apply more if you miss a spot. Work the wax into the piece in small sections. Once the wax shine becomes a haze, use another white, lint free cloth to buff the entire piece.

An alternative to paste wax is to use a matte finish poly from Varathane. The matte finish gives a look similar to paste wax. It’s durable, clear and can be applied with a brush.

Finally, if chalk paint isn’t your medium of choice, you may want to try Fusion Mineral Paint. It’s as easy to apply as latex paint and requires no top coat.

I hope these suggestions help. I know you have mad skills so just keep at it – you’ll get there 🙂 Sending you hugs, CoCo
