6 Easy to Create Coastal Home Decorating Ideas

As I am writing this, the house is completely silent. We’ve hosted company for almost two weeks in a row and while we’ve had a great time, I spent most of yesterday trying to catch my breath. I know this is probably a busy time of year for you guys too. It won’t be long before Memorial Day will be here and summer activities will be in full swing. I’m currently working on my Summer Bucket List and adding touches of summer décor around the house.

In the past, I’ve incorporated a lot of coastal touches like shells, colored glass, maps and rope. It’s been fun to see how much my style has changed over the past few years. Way before the dining room housed the 7-foot tall black painted hutch and buffet, it was home to this coastal tablescape. I painted silver cans white, added a piece of cut burlap and hot glued the starfish I bought from a local craft store to each can for an easy centerpiece.

The very next year, I used a simple color palate of white and blue for the dining room tablescape. This look was created with starfish, thrift store napkins and every day ironstone dishes.

I made this coastal inspired bunting from canvas drop cloths, stencils and paint. It’s still one of my favorites. I love the way it hangs across the mantle and frames the watercolors of the marsh.

Another favorite was this coastal inspired flag I made from an old picket fence. I watered down house paint colors we had on hand and hot glued the tiny starfish to the wood. I sold this at my booth in St. Augustine and I wish I could have made one for myself to keep.

If you have pieces of old wood around the house or even MDF you can make this sea horse art. I downloaded the image from The Graphics Fairy and painted the pair in a beautiful coastal color called Atlantic Gray. These were painted on scraps of wood and hung from rope. The entire project was free because I already had all of the materials I needed in the garage.

If there’s anything I’ve learned over the years, it’s that decorating for the seasons doesn’t have to be expensive. You can almost always create the look you want with a little paint and thrifted items. I created most of these projects in an afternoon and all were at a really reasonable price.

I still have a few things to pick up but I’m definitely excited to welcome summer into my home. I plan to do something completely different this year so I hope it works out in real life the way I envision in my head. See you guys back here tomorrow. I’m sharing how we built the frame for the porch swing.

Many blessings,

CoCo
