Simple Ways to Decorate With White

When it comes to decorating with white my love knows no bounds.

White is one of my all-time favorite colors second only to blush and I look for ways to incorporate it into the spaces of our home as often as I can.

I personally prefer a light and airy color palette.

Especially, when tones can easily be mixed and matched making spaces feel comfortable and cozy throughout the year.

White is accommodating, useful, forgiving, and it goes with everything.

Here’s a look at simple ways you can decorate with white and incorporate it into your lifestyle…

Painted Walls…

The Crowned Goat Cottage and nearly our entire home, Journeys End, is painted in Valspar’s Bistro White. It’s a warm white and definitely one of my favorite colors.

All the trim is painted in Valspar’s Ultra White and it’s a pretty shade as well.

Other Valspar colors I love are Du Jour and Quail Egg which are both creamy whites.

Two of the colors I’ve used most when helping clients choose a base color palette for their homes are Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White and Behr’s Swiss Coffee.

Liz Marie has a great post, The Top White Paint Colors if you’re interested in seeing even more neutral colors.

Decorating with White Furniture…

When I first started blogging, painted furniture was all the rage.

Even though its popularity has waned over the years, it’s still one of the most budget-friendly ways to decorate with white.

Painted Home Décor Accessories…

My Mom is one of those people who has never painted a piece of furniture because she worries she will “mess it up.”

While I understand taking on a big piece of furniture is not for everyone if you want to ease into adding fresh accessories to your home décor consider spray painting something small with white spray paint.

Everyday Dishes and Mugs, Ironstone Plates, Tureens, and Cloth Napkins…

Recently, my parents gifted me these everyday white dishes and I think about them every time I use a piece.

They can be dressed up or down without a lot of fuss which I love.

I also think about the ironstone plates, the tureens, and the vintage cloth napkins my Mom and I have treasure-hunted over the years.

Incorporating dishes, pieces of ironstone, and cloth napkins into your home each day is another easy way to decorate with white.

Bed Linens and Curtains…

There is nothing better than crawling into a big fluffy bed at the end of a long day!

Adding white and neutral bed linens and curtains to the bedrooms in your home is another simple way to decorate with white.

From white bedsheets, shams, quilts, duvets, comforters, throw pillows, and blankets the options are endless.

Decorating with White Coffee Table Books…

At first glance, you might not think decorating with white coffee table books packs much of a punch.

But I love to keep them close because they give weight to tabletop displays and vignettes and are instant sources of inspiration too.

White Flowers…

Adding greenery is always a quick and easy way to freshen up any space.

If having fresh flowers in every room is not an option, consider using them in the most commonly used areas like the kitchen, the living room, the breakfast nook, your bathroom, and on your nightstand.

If you’re frequently out of town and having fresh flowers isn’t possible, consider using quality faux flowers. There are a lot of fabulous options on the market right now.

Another simple option is to add a wreath and white flowers to your front porch or container gardens. They always feel so warm and inviting no matter what the season.

A Classic White Button Down, Tee Shirt, Sneakers, and Pearls…

A classic white button-down or tee shirt, sneakers, and pearls aren’t exactly decorating with white. But they will never go out of style and for that reason alone, I thought they deserved a mention.

If I’m ever in a pinch and have no idea what to wear to a meeting or on a Zoom call, these (and a navy blazer) are my go-to.

    1. That sounds like such a pretty color, Rachel! My parents are in the process of trying out colors for my childhood home. Every room needs to be painted and it’s going to be a big job so they’re being extra careful about the color they choose. I will definitely pass the color along to them so they can consider it. 1. Thank you so much for your kind words, Leanna, I really appreciate it. There is just something about white that never gets old to me even after all these years. Every year we used to go to my grandparent’s farm to watch The Wizard of Oz and have a big sleepover. It was always so much fun! They’ve both passed away now so I keep that sign in our kitchen in memory of them. They were so good to us! Hope your week is going well. I can’t believe how fast it’s going by already. Hugs, CoCo

  6. I am a sneakers and pearls kind of gal myself… thank you for sharing your ideas on decorating with white on Whimsy Home Wednesday. For a while every time I went to the paint store I was requesting white. I said to the gentleman who always waited on me, you are going to think everything in my house is white! His response was, well, I would rather think that because there are a lot of other things I could think. I have to say, as much as I love white, I have never painted an entire room white, or a piece of furniture. Every time I think about applying paint to a piece, I think I will mess it up like your mom things. Some of us are so afraid to dabble, maybe one of these days I will change my mind!

    1. I can totally relate to this, Cara! I just started painting small pieces at first and then worked my way up. It can definitely be scary but the more you do it the more confident you’ll become. Plus, most of the pieces I painted were thrift store finds so there wasn’t really anything to lose in trying, you know? I’ve yet to convince my Mom but I’m working on it. If for nothing else to show her it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. Hugs, CoCo
