ASCP Country Grey Dresser Makeover

I was at the Renninger’s Extravaganza with my Mom last Friday when I heard the sounds of my voicemail ringing. It was late in the day and we had been walking for what seemed like hours. My muscles were aching and my back was so sore. I quickly checked the message before we headed out. It was Judy from The Pickers Market letting me know this dresser had sold and I had a huge hole in my booth.

No worries, I thought, I have a dresser waiting to be worked on in the garage. I didn’t make it home from Mount Dora until after 9pm on Friday night, which was way later than I had anticipated. Bright and early on Saturday morning I started working on this piece.

It was so cold I decided to paint the drawers inside and wait for the sun to come out and warm things up.

012115-2

The dresser needed a small repair but it wasn’t anything a little wood putty couldn’t fix.

012115-3

Thankfully once the putty was dried and sanded I was ready to start painting the body of the piece.

I may have told you that all of my family got me presents related to The Year of the Goat for Christmas this year. One of the presents I was really excited about was a new paint color. This one is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Country Grey. It’s sort of a hard color to describe. It’s not grey but it’s not beige. It seems to have a tint of green in some light and others a tint of yellow. Either way it’s a beautiful neutral and I’m excited to try in the booth.

This was after one coat of Country Grey. If you haven’t been painting long, I just want to reassure you there is always a stage where you may feel like you’ve ruined a piece because the color or texture doesn’t come out the way you think that it should.   I’ve been painting for a while now and my first coat almost never turns out like I think it should.

012115-6

But keep it at and you’ll have a masterpiece.

012115-7

After the body and the drawers were painted, I decided to highlight the details. They were my favorite part of the dresser because they were so pretty. To highlight my favorite areas I used Old White. This is the detail without paint.

This is with the Country Grey

This is Country Grey distressed.

012115-10

Here’s a shot of the details highlighted in Old White.

012115-11

Distressed and highlighted. The details make the entire dresser, am I right?

012115-12

The hardware alone is magnificent.

012115-13

I used two coats of paint, waxed with clear furniture paste wax and buffed the entire piece with a white, lint free cloth. As always, I sanded by hand using 220 fine grit sandpaper.

012115-14

This church painting will be headed to the store soon. I hope I can let it go when the time comes.

012115-15

I delivered this piece to the store on this past Sunday around 11:40 and it sold about an hour and a half later. I was stunned.
