Thrifted Gifts for Christmas
I mentioned on Monday my sisters and I have decided our theme for this year’s gift giving will be “The Gift that Keeps on Giving.” Last year our theme was, “I Saw This and Thought of You.” My middle sister loves best-selling author, Nicholas Sparks. For months, I collected all of the missing books in her collection from thrift stores around town. I even found a first edition autographed copy of one of her favorites. She was so surprised when I presented her with all of those books for Christmas.
Pulling off a thrifted gift like that did take a little time and advanced planning. But I was able to buy all of those books at a reasonable price and it made a big impression. Gift giving doesn’t have to be expensive it just has to be from the heart. Today, I want to share with you an easy gift idea with materials you can probably find at almost any thrift store. I started with these footed milk glass pieces.
I cut a small piece of Styrofoam just big enough to fit inside the milk glass.
Next I brushed glue on the piece of Styrofoam
and covered it with plastic snow.
Once dried, I placed the snow covered Styrofoam piece back into the milk glass.
I gave a pinecone from my yard a bleach bath and let it dry out in the sun a full 24 hours. Then I took a small starfish, painted it white and glued it to the stop of the pinecone.
I set the pinecone into the footed milk glass and added a snow where needed for a thrifted gift of around $10.
Giving a thrifted gift helps to take the pressure off an already stretched holiday budget. It can also help support local charitable organizations depending on where you shop. Lastly, it shows some love for the planet when you pass on gifts that have been recycled.
