A Few Treasures and a China Hutch
After meeting a friend for lunch last Friday I had time to run into 3 stores to search for new inventory. I usually make the same loop every week based on the success that I’ve had in the past. So far, I’m still able to find great items. There are about 9 stores on the loop but I only had time for 3 so I knew I had to make each stop count. You guys know I need several pieces of furniture but after only finding a handful of smalls lately I was getting a bit discouraged. As I told you yesterday, I’m in the midst of revamping the entire space and bringing to life the vision that’s in my head. Waiting for just the right pieces to come along has tested my patience.
I left empty handed in the first store. But in the second, I found these vintage suitcases,
a perfectly weathered dish rack for displays,
three glass containers that will be perfect for housing everything from craft or office supplies to bathroom items like cotton balls and q-tips,
two small white cups
and this soup tureen. No furniture.
Time was running out and I headed for the last store. I reached for the door and read the flier. The sale of the day was on furniture. I tried not to get my hopes up because this store is not known for having reasonably priced furniture. But the piece I found had been there for a while and with the sale it was within $5 of my budget. I headed to the checkout with the ticket for this china cabinet,
a glass boot perfume bottle (perfect for a bedroom makeover),
glass fish plates
and this pale blue shell. It’s not usually an item that I would come home with but the color won me over. I also bought a lamp that’s set to get a makeover later this week.
We hauled the china cabinet home on Saturday and in between screams of “Oh, come on Seattle! What are you doing!” I gave the china hutch a makeover on Sunday. I only mention this because I usually paint in complete silence. I used a custom mix of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White and Country Grey to paint the body of both pieces.
I wanted the inside to be painted the color of sea glass so I made a custom mix of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White and Duck Egg.
I distressed with 220-grit sandpaper and waxed with clear furniture paste wax.
There are two shelves that come with the china hutch but I still have to haul this beast to the booth so I’m leaving the shelves out for now. I’m hoping to have my booth completely redone by Friday so I’ll take a few more pictures of the china hutch all staged and pretty then. This rusted knob makes my knees weak.
I’m so happy with how the custom colors came out. Sometimes when I’m mixing a little bit of this and a little bit of that I feel like a mad scientist. I have the wild, frizzy hair and everything.
See you guys back here tomorrow, S built a display piece last week and it’s huge!

Girl…I don’t want to bust your bubble or anything, but I don’t think you’re going to have time to “stage” this china hutch. It is so pretty it won’t be in your booth long enough because it will be headed to its new home 🙂 Fabulous color choices on the hutch!

Girl! Forget the booth…I don’t think I could let that thing out my front door! I’d be staking claim to it right then and there. It’s beautiful! I love the inside pale blue with the white. Gorgeous! Ditto Vicki’s comment…it’s not going to be in your booth for long!

Coco, I love your stories of thrift shopping and totally can appreciate the time it takes and the thrill of the hunt. I wish I found this kind of furniture. I feel like when I do see it, it’s marked $200 or really high. You found sooo many great things on your trip and again the China Hutch is a piece of art and I cannot believe your talent!! Lisa, I really appreciate it. It is getting more and more difficult to find great pieces at a reasonable price. I love the hunt though so it keeps me hot on the treasure trail. Hope you have a happy day too, CoCo

I bet it was hard to get it home for the re-do, and even harder to get it out the door to your booth. It won’t be there for long! Beautiful transformation, and that sea glass color is perfect! It’s so gorgeous, it won’t need much taking ~ maybe just the pretty white tureen and blue shell 🙂 Bwg ~~~
I was sort of nervous about the inside color Bobbi but it all worked out. I just kept mixing paint until I was able to achieve my favorite color of sea glass. I know your heart speaks in sea glass colors too 🙂
