How to Make a Festive Word of the Year Ornament
We’re sharing how to make a festive Word of the Year ornament today as we count down to New Year’s Eve with a handmade touch.
New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, reflection, and looking forward to exciting new beginnings.
One fun and creative way to add a personal touch to your New Year festivities is by making your own Word of the Year ornament.
This simple idea came about as I was cleaning up after making a vintage inspired jewelry ornament and realized I had leftover supplies.

So, instead of packing the extras away, I asked my bestie S if she had picked out a Word of the Year yet.
Without hesitation, she said, “Rich. I want to be rich in health, wealth, friendships, and knowledge.”
Honestly, this is another one of those easy craft ideas that doesn’t really need a tutorial, but I know they’re always helpful.
Here’s a look at how to make a festive Word of the Year ornament.

Word of the Year Ornament
Supplies
- Flat Craft Ornament (purchased at Hobby Lobby)
- Paint (craft paint or spray paint)
- Permanent Marker
- Embellishment (purchased at Hobby Lobby)
- Adhesive Glue (depending on the type of embellishment you choose)
- Ribbon
Steps
Gather your supplies.
First, paint your ornament and allow it to dry completely.
I spray painted the front of this ornament using Rustoleum Metallic Champagne Bronze spray paint.

Once your paint is dry, add your Word of the Year to the back of the ornament.

Next, attach your embellishment to your ornament.
I found this pearl letter iron on sticker patch at Hobby Lobby.
But depending on the type of embellishment you choose, you might need additional glue adhesive.
As always, make sure you read all the instructions that come with your choice of glue.

Once your letter is securely in place, add a bow or a ribbon so your ornament can easily be gifted or hung on the tree.

Tips for Displaying Your Word of the Year Ornament
Keep in mind, you don’t have to pack Word of the Year ornaments like these away in January.
You can also keep them on your desk, hang them from a door knob, keep them in your jewelry box or include them on your vision board.
That way, your Word of the Year will be front and center each day.
Whether you’re dressing up your home in black, white and gold, hosting a party, popping champagne or participating in a midnight gift exchange, handmade ornaments are a memorable way to ring in the New Year.
So, gather your friends and family and get creative!
