Spice Cake Donuts with Cream Cheese Frosting

Today, we’re sharing this quick and easy recipe for delicious spice cake donuts with cream cheese frosting.

Fall Birthday Breakfast Inspiration

A few weeks ago, my sweet nephew called me up with his birthday wish list. He can be tough to buy for because he’s not into “kid” things anymore but he’s not really into “teenager” things either. Last year, he asked for a new riding helmet and the year before he asked for a pair of special soccer cleats.

Honestly, I thought he would ask for the same kind of things this year until he started rattling off games and drones and models of i-phones he wanted. After he had to explain to me what 3 out of the 4 things on his wish list were, (I felt SO old and behind the times by the way), he patiently said, “Don’t worry, Aunt CoCo, I’m saving the best gift for last.”

I was just about to breathe a sigh of relief when he said, “Can you get me a Dunkin Donuts gift card for my birthday? I love donuts and we could go every morning for a month with a gift card!”

No playing, I had to stifle the giggles thinking about my size zero sister driving the littles to DD every morning for a month.  He was so excited I said, “Thanks for all the great ideas, Buddy, I can’t wait to shop for your gift.”

His enthusiasm over eating donuts had me thinking about them for the rest of the day,. So, I decided there had to be a simple way to make donuts for him.

It took a bit of research, but I finally landed on a quick and easy recipe for spice cake donuts with cream cheese frosting. This recipe is so delicious, we’ll be making them throughout the Fall season.

Here’s a look at all the details so you can make them too! (Affiliate links have been provided for your convenience. You can read our full disclosure policy here)

Spice Cake Donuts with Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe & Supplies:

Spice Cake Donuts with Cream Cheese Frosting Steps:

Step #1:

Preheat Oven to 350 degrees and spray your donut pan with non-stick cooking spray.

Step #2 & #3:

Mix together spice cake mix, egg, oil and water. Fill a pastry bag with spice cake batter and fill donut molds about ½ full. Some of mine were way too full in the beginning. They looked like bagels when they came out of the oven, just saying ?

Step #4 & #5:

Using caution and care as oven will be hot, bake for 12-13 minutes. Again, using caution and care, remove the donut pan from the oven. Allow the spice cake donuts to cool in the pan for 4-5 minutes.

Step #6:

Remove spice cake donuts from the donut pan and allow the donuts to cool completely on a wire baking rack.

Step #7:

Lay a piece of parchment paper over a baking sheet. Then lay the cooling rack with the spice cake donuts on the parchment paper.

Step #8:

Drizzle store bought cream cheese frosting (or make your own) over each spice cake donut with a spoon or use a pastry bag.

Step #9:

Enjoy!

These spice cake donuts are so good I made a batch for my bestie S and her coworkers. I could totally see them being enjoyed snuggled up on a weekend morning, as an afternoon snack with a hot cup of coffee or as part of a Fall inspired dessert bar. No playing, they were easier to make than cupcakes.

With so many different kinds of cake mix and frosting combinations available at the grocery store, I think we might be making these a lot. I can’t wait for the littles to try these too.

Until then, I’ll be on the treadmill if you need me.
