Neutrals Inspired Bedroom Makeover Reveal

The very minute I put the roller of paint saturated with Valspar’s Quail Egg onto the wall and watched the paint fill the textured grooves I felt at peace. As I shared yesterday this room has gone through so many changes. At the time, I thought the room was beautiful. But as soon as I walked into the space – it no longer felt like me.

Given the other areas of the house have gone through subtle changes there are a few things I’ve noticed that haven’t changed at all. We’ve used wood grain, painted furniture, whites, beiges, grays and blacks in every room but three. Throughout this journey of style discovery I’ve learned it’s important when you live in an open floor plan house the rooms need to complement each other not compete. It made sense to have a blue painted bedroom and a green painted office when the house was accented with the colors of the sea but as we’ve moved to a more neutral palate the greens and blues just didn’t seem to work any more. I wanted a space that felt relaxed. A space that felt peaceful. A space that made me want to take a nap as soon as I walked through the door. When I walked into this space, I felt overwhelmed with clutter.

In order to create a space that truly felt serene I only left the bits that I truly loved. I loved the mantel we turned into a headboard and after painting the walls I decided to paint it in custom shades of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint mixing French Linen, Pure White and Old White.

I topped the mantel with frames that I picked up at thrift stores.

I decided to layer the bed with a mix of new and vintage linens. I’ve had this pin tucked duvet for a few years now. The white sheets are part of Rachel Ashwell’s collection from Target. They launder really well and the price is nice too.

I love the ruffled bed skirt, which compliments the shower curtain so I decided to keep it.

I found this 3 x 5 rug at Ross for $19.99. I would love a bigger one for my office.

You may remember this vintage leather chair used to be in the living room. It was displaced once we moved the white bookcases from my office into the living room and I’m so glad to be able to use both the chair and the ottoman. I’ve used this pillow in so many different spots around the house. The Bunker Hill scrap came from Renningers.

I found the little side table for $1 at a yard sale in early June while I was visiting my hometown. I’ll probably paint it French Linen in the next few weeks because there’s just too much brown going on in this corner. The picture in the frame is of my granddaddy. It’s sticking to the glass and I’m so afraid to pull the picture off for fear of ripping it. The wooden beads and shaving cup came from one of my favorite secret shopping spots.

The metal horse is from Décor Steals. I love love love it. The frame used to be above the mantel. My Mom found it for me last year.

We moved the dresser from the far wall to this wall and it’s worked out really well.

My mom also found the picture of the Queen for me at a thrift store. I think she paid $1 and I was so excited when she gave it to me.

Both dressers and the mirror are pieces that my mom had as a teenager. I’m so thankful to be able to use them still.

We made the mirror that used to be one of the nightstands a tray, added the burlap bee covered vase that used to be in the bathroom and took the rusty birdcage from its base.

The lace curtains used to hang in the dining room and helped to soften the entire space.

Two of THE best ladies on the planet saved my birthday with just one phone call. Way back in January my mom and two sisters piled in the car with me and we took a 3-hour road trip to IKEA. My brother in laws graciously agreed to watch the kids all day and gave us their blessing to be gone as long as we wanted. We laughed all the way there and had the best time. I had a list of things I wanted to purchase and checked items off as we walked through the store. I made my way to the posters and was totally bummed when they were out of poster I had just driven 3 hours to purchase. No playing, near tears, my baby sister LiLi searched online and found the posters at the IKEA in Atlanta. I called two of the sweetest ladies in Atlanta I know and without hesitation Vicki and Jenn said they would get the poster for me. Cue the tears for real. I was so excited.

I picked up this table last month from my secret shopping spot called The Warehouse. I found this painting at a thrift store for $6. I found the lamp at another thrift store and I love its chippy base. The tea stained papers came from Marshalls a few years ago.

I feel like it’s taken a while for me to understand my true style. I’m sure at some point it will change again and I’ll be back to trading items in and out of this space. But this time, I feel more at peace about the direction my style is headed.

Coco, Love this neutral change. Isn’t it funny how we go through color changes;how we love LOVE something and then, we don’t?!?! Change is good and who knows what motivates it (I wonder if Eve changed out her home and if Adam complained about it). What a great color, I’ve got yet another room waiting for a paint makeover- maybe Quai Egg will be my choice. I like the idea of neutral walls that stand the test of time and accessories that are easily changeable. Thanks for the inspiration. Sorry ive been absent from blog land ….both writing and reading…illness and family obligations have trumped blogging. I’ve missed your posts! Xoxo Donna (Faded Velvet)
