Christmas Inspired Dining Room

I can honestly say, this Christmas inspired dining room tablescape almost didn’t happen. A few days before Thanksgiving my sweet Mom came to help decorate the house for the holidays and as soon as I opened the front door to greet her, I started sobbing. Mostly out of complete exhaustion. It’s funny to think about how emotional I was now, but at the time, I just could not get myself together, you guys.
I’ve come to understand and appreciate, being a caregiver is tough sometimes. And between all the pre and post-op surgical appointments, trying to coordinate food deliveries, taking care of the dogs at 330 am each morning, trying to learn how to cook on the fly, handle wound care like Florence Nightingale, having to host company for over 10 days not even a day after surgery, and keep our spirits up for a magical Christmas – which I take very seriously – it was all just a little too much, I think.
Through all the tears my adorable and very Southern Mom said, “Honey, don’t worry about all this. You’ll get through it. You’re just tired and you need a little Christmas and that’s what I’m here for.” Now just imagine her saying all this with her stick straight Anna Wintour style haircut, complete with top to bottom J Crew ensemble, statement necklace and glittery shoes because that is my Mom in a nutshell.
Anyway, the words, “need a little Christmas,” stuck with me and subsequently became our theme song for the rest of the day because truthfully, it was exactly what we needed!
We started out with our place settings, a collection of mismatched plates and chargers. Next, we made these cute cones out of music sheets, tied them with pretty ribbon and stuffed them with floral picks that resembled Japanese holly to which we naturally hummed the line, “haul out the holly.”
After the table settings were in place, we set about creating a centerpiece we could use not only for the Christmas season but well into the New Year too.
Our dining room table is pretty long, so we decided to layer the outdoor container with a simple moss runner to help tie everything together.
Once the tablescape was in place, we headed to the store for some evergreen bough. We found this garland at Michaels and it looks and feels so real!
We also found the ornaments at Michaels and the bowl is one we’ve had for years. On a side note, I’ve already started going through my ironstone collection. It’s so hard to only keep the favorites but you guys, we’ve got ironstone everywhere.
Of course, we had to add pops of pink with these satin bows. I’ve been waiting all summer to use this $1.99 ribbon and while it’s not tinsel it feels just as special.
After the hutch was good to go, we fluffed up our makeshift buffet adding a bit of greenery to our growing collection of brown and white transferware.
And then we stood back and took it all in.
What started out as an emotional morning had turned into a fun and festive day complete with peppermint mochas and the house filled with Christmas music for hours. Right before my eyes, we had decked the halls with Christmas cheer from the front porch, to the entry, to the living room, the breakfast nook, the bedrooms, the kitchen and the dining room too.
And while we didn’t have candles in the windows and carols at the spinet, we had the most magical day just being together.
So, if you’re still wandering around the stores looking for the perfect gift or sitting at your laptop perusing all the exciting gift guides that have been floating around the web, I encourage you to stop for a minute to consider that someone around you needs a little Christmas and the gift of your time, your friendship, your kindness and understanding might just be the best gift you could give this year.

Aww…this made me cry! We all have times like that CoCo…so wonderful you and your mother could make it into a beautiful day full of memory-making, and such wonderful decor! We all put so much pressure on ourselves…this time of year especially…trying to make it nice for everyone. My mother lives across the country from me, so I appreciate your time together even more. Could you send your adorable mother to my house, please? I need some of that Southern encouragement and know-how-to-accomplish-what-needs-doing. Everything looks wonderful, but I love the garden planter as the table centerpiece the most.

Oh Coco, this just warms my heart to know you were able to get in the Christmas spirit! You are such a kind and giving person and deserve to enjoy the holidays!
