DIY Pearl Embellished Sweatshirt

We’re sharing how to craft a DIY pearl embellished sweatshirt.

Over the holiday season, I found the cutest embellished sweater while out shopping with one of my girlfriends.

It was a beautiful shade of evergreen, and the collar had a mix of pearls and rhinestones all around it.

Truthfully, it was the kind of top that could have easily been dressed up or down.

They did not have my size in the store though.

And by the time I got around to ordering the sweater online, it was sold out of my size completely.

I tried to let it go.

But the more I thought about it the more I wished I had simply asked the sales associate to order it for me.

I finally decided to try and make my own version of the sweater.

Yet I’m still very much a beginner when it comes to fabric glue and embellishments.

So, instead of embellishing a sweater, I decided to make a budget friendly sweatshirt.

Here’s a look at how to craft a DIY pearl embellished sweatshirt.

Embellished Sweatshirt Supplies:

  • Cotton Sweatshirt (I bought this sweatshirt from Amazon in the color pink. It’s a men’s sweatshirt so I sized down one size. Also of note, I would say the color is closer to light salmon than a pale pink)
  • Flat Back Pearl Embellishments in 10 mm and 8 mm (I bought these at Hobby Lobby in the color Ecru)
  • Aleene’s Industrial Super Fabric Glue
  • Wrapped Cardboard (this one is wrapped with something like cling wrap)
  • Gloves
  • Mask
  • Protective Eyewear

Embellished Sweatshirt Steps:

Gather your supplies and make sure you’ve read all the instructions on the back of your glue package.

Industrial Super Fabric Glue can cause irritation and in my opinion has an obnoxious odor.

So, make sure to wear protective gear and do this project in a well-ventilated area.

Lay your sweatshirt down flat.

Then insert plastic or cling wrapped cardboard through the neck of the sweatshirt.

Next, lay your pearl embellishments out in the design of your choice.

I’m going to lay these out like a necklace.

Once the design is ready to go, apply glue to each pearl embellishments.

Press firmly to secure them in place.

Allow the glue to dry completely (about 72 hours) before washing or handling.

Carefully remove the cling wrapped cardboard.

Hand wash when you’re ready to launder.

Customizing Sweatshirts…

As with our DIY Valentine’s Day pajamas, I love that sweatshirts like these are budget friendly and can be embellished with flat back gems in a variety of ways.

One of my aunts embellished a jean jacket years ago, and it’s been so much fun to see embellished jackets and jeans trending again.

While I plan to wear this sweatshirt for a casual Galentine’s Day lunch, my sisters and I got my Mom tickets to see Rod Steward in concert and I would love to recreate my aunt’s jean jacket before the big day.

Until then, I’m going to be on the lookout for more flat back gems because this sweatshirt was so much fun to make!
