Fall Porch Decorating Ideas

Weโ€™re sharing Fall Porch Decorating Ideas today as we team up with some of our favorite creative ladies for the Falling for Porches Blog Hop hosted by the wildly talented Laura of Decor to Adore.

If you’re coming over from Wendy’s blog, WM Design House, welcome, we’re excited to have you here.

Didn’t you love Wendy’s Fall table decorations? She always makes things feel so warm and inviting no matter what the season.

A Dream Becomes a Reality…

The front porch is hands down one of the most sentimental spaces on our property.

I can still remember sitting on the couch of my apartment while in graduate school, in a not-so-great area of town flipping through magazines and dreaming of having a big front porch to decorate one day.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine my fall porch decorating ideas would be on a porch that covers nearly half our home.

Especially, after basically dressing up a tiny stoop season after season.

Getting a Game Plan Together at the Garden Center…

To be perfectly honest, Iโ€™m never really sure how our Fall porch will be decorated year after year.  Of course, I start out with a plan in mind which always includes gobs of mums.

They’re definitely another sentimental Fall favorite.

I grew up in a military family and no matter where we lived my Mom always made sure to have lots of mums around the house and on the porch this time of year.

By the time I get to the garden center though, my fall porch decorating ideas almost always change based solely on the types of mums that are available.

Mums

Over the years, weโ€™ve enjoyed a porch front porch filled with French Country Fall color, yellow mums, and white and orange mums.

But these purple mums will go down as a favorite because they were a complete surprise.

This is the first time our garden center has ever carried purple or pink mums.

So, they were a special treat!

Fall Porch Decorating Ideas Using Purple Mums.

I saw these huge purple mums at Walmart and totally fell in love. Theyโ€™re so big we had to move the metal plant stand out a bit.

But they add a fun pop of color around our front door and to our Fall Grapevine Wreath as well.

Purple Mums

As you can imagine, it takes a while to decorate the front porch in any season, especially Fall.

I usually start around the front door first.

Once that space is settled, I move on to each zone on the front porch.

Creating Seating Zones…

A few years ago, we broke the porch up into zones and it made a huge difference!

Pumpkin Table Centerpiece

We have two seating areas with rugs to help break things up and itโ€™s really helped to make things more cohesive.

Most of the wicker pieces and the trunk you see here were vintage or thrifted finds.

The base linens are white bed skirts we can easily throw in the washing machine and bleach.

Then we use inexpensive materials and thrifted blankets or quilts to help round out the look.

Both couches are cozy spots for reading or hanging out for a long chat.

The table and trunk are fantastic for serving drinks or snacks.

Every season when we change out the front porch from one season to the next, we make it an event and break out the nibbles.

Now is a great time of year to invite friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers over to enjoy your fall porch decorating ideas or to host a festive fall party.

Fall Porch Decorating Ideas and Simple Tips to Remember…

When it comes to fall porch decorating ideas my best tip is to follow these simple stepsโ€ฆ

  1. Determine your color palette
  2. Dress up your door first
  3. Then add Fall foliage, flowers, and pumpkins around the door or on the steps
  4. Layer in color and texture with blankets and pillows if you have seating areas
  5. If youโ€™re hosting an event and donโ€™t have time to bake different kinds of goodies, shop your local bakery or hire a local catering service to help make things easy

As we always say, the hustle and bustle of the holiday will be here before we know it!

Start crossing some fun things off your bucket list like visiting the pumpkin patch, going on a hayride, or sipping a pumpkin spice latte now.

There are so many amazing things to enjoy this time of year.

Most especially, take a few moments to create a seasonal home that welcomes your family and friends with all your favorite Fall porch decorating ideas.

  1. I love love all the purple mums.
I like the way you kept things neutral
so that the purple mums could be the show
stopper. Itโ€™s a very inviting space to spend
    alone time or with friends.

    1. Thank you so much, Lizzy! It was definitely exciting to put this porch together, thanks to the purple mums. I’m normally not a fan of bold color like this but as soon as I saw them I fell in love. The biggest lesson I learned throughout this decorating process was without a doubt, it’s a good thing to step out of your comfort zone sometimes ๐Ÿ™‚ Hugs for a happy day, CoCo

  2. Hi CoCo!
What a beautiful fall porch! I love the addition of the purple mums. They really stand out next to all the other neutral colors. I also love your idea of using bed skirts as a base for all of the linens you bring out. I’m going to have to be on the lookout for bed skirts at our thrift stores. Your use of linens has really given me some incentive to cozy things up a little more on my porches when our company is here for Thanksgiving. Thanks so much for sharing at Homestyle Gathering! Have a beautiful rest of the week!

    1. That’s so sweet of you to say, Kim, thank you! Using the white bed skirts makes things super easy because they add softness to the porch but they can also be thrown in the wash and bleached when needed. We’re all about simple ideas around here ๐Ÿ™‚ I know your porch is going to be fantastic too. Hugs for a happy week, CoCo

  3. Mum is definitely the word for your front porch, isn’t it, CoCo??? Those purple flowers make such a lovely statement, and I love the lamb’s ear and pumpkins on the chest, too! Gorgeous as always, friend!

    1. I really appreciate it, Julie, thank you so much! If the mums display on the porch get any bigger they’re going to need their own budget ๐Ÿ™‚ Sending you big hugs for a happy week, CoCo

  4. What a fabulous front porch CoCo. Made even better with your beautiful pots of mums.

    Hugs,

    1. I really appreciate it, Kerryanne, thank you so much! I love mums of all colors. They always remind me of the many adventures we’re able to enjoy during Fall. Hope your week has been a good one, CoCo

  5. CoCo your porch iss always beautiful.

The purple mums are gorgeous. They are huge.

There were so many yummy goodies to nibble on.

    Pinned!

  6. Love all of your posts. They are always so beautiful. However, I am somewhat disappointed that so many bloggers are losing the true essence of fall. By that, I mean, the colors of fall. The trees changing to orange and yellow and red is so amazing. Those are the colors of fall, not pink and lavender and blue. I guess I’m too much of a traditionalist. But again, you do a beautiful job with your posts.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing your opinion, Valerie. Since we live in Florida our leaves never change to reds, yellows or oranges. In the past we’ve chosen to create our own kind of fall by using some of the colors you mentioned on our porch tour which I’ve linked to in this post. That said, we have to take what is available at the garden center and decorate what we feel inspired by at the time. There are lots of beautiful porch tours by creative bloggers filled with the colors you have described in the post and I hope you’ll find something you love. All the best, CoCo

  7. What a fabulous post Coco. I loved all of your inspiring ideas! Using a bed skirt as your base linen is ingenious!
Thank you so much for joining the hop. I’ve pinned and will be posting on FB and IG.

  8. Gorgeous, CoCo!! Those mums are just fantastic!!! I love all of the pretty heirloom pumpkins you added and all of the cozy blankets and pillows for cozying up outside. Like you, I dream of having a large porch to decorate someday ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. It’s sad but we always had a porch growing up but never did I put forth the effort to decorate it. Mom did a teensy bit but never anything fabulous. It wasn’t until I got married that I got the urge. Life was busier I guess. Anyway, I love that you now have the perfect porch to play with and make look seriously gorgeous! Looks like the best place to entertain! So cozy and colorful with fantastic yummies! Enjoy

  14. Your porch is so dreamy! I’d love to sit here and daydream the day away!! I love all those mums! So pretty!! No matter what I do, I can never seem to keep mums alive long enough to justify buying them. Your porch makes me want to give mums another try. Soooo pretty!!!!!

  15. Oh my goodness! What a lovely porch you have. It is so warm and inviting. I could spend all day there. My porch is only big enough for the Amazon guy to leave a package. Blessings to you.
