From the Front Porch: Setting the Stage for Fall
Several years ago, my parents were vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard, and every day my Mom called to share a new discovery.
“You would not believe the hydrangeas here,” or “I can’t get over all these fresh herb gardens. I bet Ina’s looks just like this!” or “I found the cutest shop with lobster-printed sweatshirts today.”
Truly, every day was a delight because we had no idea what she would call to tell us about next.

My Mom was so inspired by the trip that she went to the garden center and bought lots of herbs for her lanai the minute she got home.
And for a while, she put rosemary on her chicken, lavender in her baths, and sprigs of mint in her cucumber water.
But as happens to so many of us, despite her best intentions, she ultimately found herself in a new and very unexpected season of life.
One where it became too hard to use or maintain the herbs due to time, travel, and physical constraints.

For weeks, my Mom was frustrated every time she thought about the herb garden because she had poured so much love and effort into a dream she knew was slowly dying.
And even though it was a great idea at the time, she eventually came to terms with the fact that it was just not the right season of life to commit to growing herbs.
So, she adjusted her expectations.

I share this because last week I found myself sitting on the bench of a beautiful botanical garden filled with butterflies I had only previously seen in books.
It was hot, humid, and incredibly peaceful, and I was in complete awe watching the butterflies and the tiny birds dance about.

My first thought was, “I could totally recreate this experience in my backyard. We already have the heat and humidity. All we need now is to bring in some water features and lots of tropical and butterfly-friendly plants!”
But just as quickly as that thought entered my mind, I thought back to my Mom’s herb garden and realized it was one of the many ideas that sounded amazing yet was simply not a good fit for this season of our lives.
And I knew immediately I would have to adjust my expectations as well.

As we dive further into the month where change and transition abound, I encourage you to find the areas of your life that are filled with resistance or frustration due to unmet expectations.
Grieve your original idea or plan if you need to, then think about how you can grow through your circumstances.
Do you need to find peace and let the situation go completely, or can you find a way to adjust your expectations and enjoy the experience in a different way?

Learning how to adjust our expectations will be some of the hardest lessons we will ever have to learn.
But they can also be some of the most rewarding.
Cheering you on as you navigate unexpected growth and change this season.

Thank you for your inspiring words, I needed to hear them this week!! Those butterfly pictures are gorgeous!
Thanks so much, Donna, and happy this post helped. I need reminders like this all the time too. Hang in there, CoCo
Hi CoCo- Your observations on expectations are spot on. When I lived in California- I used to try to grow roses. It was an utter failure because the valley gets SO hot June through October. My roses baked to a crisp. Love the wallpaper you shared. It would look fabulous in your laundry room! Thank you for another great edition of from the front porch!
I feel the same way about my hydrangeas this year, Anna. It’s like you baby them all winter and then summer hits and you just hold your breath. Loved your post on wallpapers this week. It was filled with so much inspiration! Hugs, CoCo
Coco
I appreciate you so much for sharing my wreath. I hope you are having the best day!
You are so welcome, Rachel. It’s gorgeous! Hope you’re having the best day too, CoCo
Stunning photos CoCo. Your words of wisdom I tuck away each week to ponder, and this one hits home with me. There is something I am slowing down with as we speak, it makes my heart a bit upset, but I need to. So… the butterflies, I have to share with you. I have a monarch that has been visiting me often lately. I cannot grow flowers, or much of anything to save my life, so I am not sure what the draw is, but it flies so closely to my face, and we just peer at one another. I have come to enjoy and look forward to our visits each week. Our pup Bentley, even stays still while watching the beauty of that monarch fly about our yard. I wish I knew what was bringing it to my yard, but I like to think we enjoy each other’s company in the quiet, serene last days of summer. I am hoping for more visits next year from our black and orange friend. Have a wonderful weekend!
We just visited a butterfly garden in Victoria, so seeing all the butterflies in your post was really fun. Thank you for another week of inspiration.
I really loved the story you shared about the herb garden. I can’t tell you how many “herb garden” ideas I have. Your post is such a good reminder to make sure our expectations align with what we can actually accomplish.
There’s so much wisdom in this post! There are so many projects I have either started or want to start, but I know this is not the time. Thanks for the reminder! It seems like this is a way of giving ourselves grace beforehand.
Hi CoCo- I love all your butterfly pictures and I can see why you would be tempted, but you are 100% right about adjusting expectations. It’s been a hard realization to grasp for me that I can’t do all the things anymore because of age and my MS journey. But I try to enjoy the things I still do and bring me joy. Thanks for the spiritual inspiration as always. I appreciate you including my Fall mantel here- I am touched and it made my day! Wishing you the best day sweet friend. XO- MaryJo
