From the Front Porch: French Country Fall
Hello from the front porch sweet friends and welcome to the French Country Fall edition of this weekly series.
I hope your week has been all that you’ve needed it to be.
Several years ago, one of my oldest friends called me at lunch.
She’s wildly independent and hates to talk on the phone.
So, the minute I saw her number, I knew something was wrong.
“I’m up next,” she said.
“I’ve studied this case a million times. I’m prepared. I’m organized and I’m ready to go. But I’m so mad about this situation, I’m worried my emotions are going to get the best of me. Any advice?”
My first instinct was to say, “Remember who you are,” in the hopes she would remember she was incredibly smart, capable, successful and had held her own in a field dominated by men for decades which was not an easy feat.
Instead, I said, “Who do you want to be in this moment?”
Without hesitation she replied, “Brave and assertive.”
“Then go in that courtroom and be those things,” I said.
I think sometimes we forget we can actively choose who we want to be each day.
Especially when we’re faced with an awkward or challenging situation, a loss of motivation, or an unexpected life event and our first inclination is to keep things the way they have always been.
We can choose differently though.
As we begin to prepare for the last quarter of the year, I encourage you to think about how you want to show up.
There are lots of things you can choose: joyful, happy, loving, compassionate, calm, purposeful, smart, strong, educated, capable, ambitious, adventurous, articulate, vulnerable, brilliant, charming, cheerful, confident and so many other things.
As always, I’ll be cheering you on.
