How to Create a Hotel Inspired Turndown Service at Home

We’re sharing how to create a hotel inspired turndown service at home today!

As most of you know I come from a big farm family.

One of the coolest things about growing up in a big family is that your cousins become your best friends for life.

Two of my cousins are actually double first cousins.

And I can barely recall a week we weren’t at their house for dinner or an impromptu sleepover.

While my uncle was reading us a Bible story, my aunt would go into our rooms dim the lights, turn on the electric blanket, and place a glass of water on the nightstand.

And those three seemingly small touches immediately created a cozy invitation to rest.

If you’ve ever had the experience of a proper hotel turndown service, you know it feels much the same, completely luxurious.

Now is a great time to start thinking about how you can incorporate simple pleasures and little luxuries into your daily life if you haven’t already.

Especially easy ideas like how to create a hotel inspired turndown service at home.

It’s something we’ve incorporated into our nightly routine and look forward to every single day.

Here’s a look at how to create a hotel inspired turndown service at home…

Remove Decorative Pillows and Fluff Your Sleeping Pillows

If you’re someone who likes a lot of decorative pillows (me too), remove them first.

After I put away mine, I fluff and prop up the sleeping pillows.

That way, they’re prepped for nighttime journaling or reading in bed.

Turn Down Your Bed Linens

Next, one of the easiest ways to create a hotel inspired turndown service at home is by turning down your bed linens.

To do this, you’ll simply fold down your duvet and top sheet exposing your fitted sheet.

Turn On Your Electric or Warming Blanket

I’ve recently started using an electric blanket during the winter months.

Gosh does it feel heavenly to climb into a warm bed!

Having said that I’m also a hot sleeper.

So, I’m careful to take full advantage of the automatic shut off timer feature and the ability to easily turn the electric blanket off altogether.

As always, electric blankets are not without risk.

Make sure you read, understand, and properly follow the manufacturer’s instructions before using them.

Create a Hotel Inspired Turndown Service at Home by Spritzing Your Pillows with a Peaceful Scent or Use An Essential Oil Diffuser

Once the bed is prepped and ready, I add a few drops of Good Nite Essential Oil to my diffuser and turn it on.

It makes the entire room smell so good and is a simple way to create a hotel inspired turndown service at home.

If a diffuser is not your thing, you can always spritz your pillow with a fragrance that feels relaxing.

My Mom spritzes her pillows each night as well.

Place Water or Tea on Your Nightstand

Another easy way to create a hotel inspired turndown service at home is placing something to drink on your nightstand.

While a glass and a carafe of water is always my first choice, I understand how nice it is to sip a cup of tea before bedtime.

Placing items like these on trays makes tidying up the next day easy peasy too.

Make Room for Your Book, Kindle, Journal, Earpods and Sleep Mask on Your Nightstand

If you enjoy reading, you already know there’s something special about curling up with a good book or a journal at the end of a long day.

When I feel invested in the characters, it feels like I’m catching up with old friends.

At the same time, I’ve also found journaling before bed incredibly helpful.

For one, it allows me to work through any hiccups or frustrations I’ve encountered during the day.

For another, it allows me to focus on what I need to prioritize the following day.

Tidy Up with a 15 Minute Clutter Catcher

Taking 15 minutes to tidy up before going to sleep has been a game changer for our family.

We tidy up the common areas and the bedrooms each night before going to bed.

Not only is it safer to make sure things are off the floor, but it also makes me feel more relaxed knowing the bedroom is neat and tidy.

Create a Hotel Inspired Turndown Service at Home by Drawing the Curtains or Closing the Blinds

Another quick way to create a hotel inspired turndown service at home is to draw the curtains and blinds at the end of the day.

It instantly creates a cocoon like feeling!

Dim the Lights

As with closing the blinds, dimming the lights will also help to create a cozy invitation to rest.

We have Alexa dim the lights and turn on the lamps for us every night.

It saves so much time!

Set Your Alarm and Plug in Your Devices

At some point, you’ve probably woken up to a phone with a dead battery because you’ve forgotten to charge it.

This used to happen to me too until I got into the habit of plugging my phone into the charger each night.

More times than not, I leave my phone on my home office desk so that I’m not tempted to use it during the night.

That said, as someone who has trouble sleeping at times, I know how helpful a sleep podcast can be.

So, place your phone in an area that works best for you.

When Should You Start Your Hotel Inspired Turndown Service Ritual?

While you can start your hotel inspired turndown service ritual at any point you’re ready to wind down, I start the process *before* I get into the bathtub each night.

That way, the sheets are warm, and everything is ready to go!

    1. That’s so sweet of you to say, Susan, thank you. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh coat of paint or some new linens to make everything feel cozy again. Hope you’re having a great week so far, CoCo

  1. I don’t think I’m staying in the right hotels, lol!! So, I love the idea of creating this luxury at home! So many great tips to make sleeping comfy and cozy! I need to find a scent I love and can spritz on my pillow!! Thanks for the inspiration!

  2. Hi CoCo – There are so many good tips. I am tempted to buy a heated blanket – our bedroom is so cold and in the winter, I hate getting into a bed with cold sheets! Love all your photos – they are so inspiring. Wishing you a great night’s sleep!

  3. I always love the touches of blush you have throughout your home CoCo. It is so inviting. You reminded me that I loved sleeping with my electric blanket before we got married, I think I need to drag it back out because slipping into cold sheets is not my thing. I am always cold when I first go to bed until the sheets warm up. Your aunt sounds so kind in creating a wonderful memory. My husband always goes to bed with a glass of water, and I have recently adopted it myself these last few months. Beats getting out of bed, walking downstairs, and then struggling to go back to sleep! Thank you for your tips.
