DIY Affirmation, Prayer or Wish Box Ideas

We’re sharing DIY affirmation, prayer or wish box ideas as we team up with the fabulous ladies of the Handcrafted Society today.

This month our theme is something geometric and the inspiration for this post came in the most unlikely place.

I was looking for sleep away camp care package ideas when I heard about some flight attendants who had fellow passengers write marriage advice on napkins to a couple who was traveling to their destination wedding.

The following day, one of my favorite vloggers shared she keeps her fortune cookie messages in a special keepsake box.

I also keep sentimental ephemera and it’s always fun to dig back through the treasure box to relive each moment.

So, I wanted to share simple ways you can create a time capsule, gift of encouragement or a place to hold your favorite memories with a DIY affirmation, prayer or wish box ideas.

DIY Affirmation, Prayer or Wish Box Ideas…

Supplies:

  • Scrapbook Paper or Napkins (I bought these from Michaels)
  • Box (I bought this box from Michaels, you can find the mint box at the grocery store)
  • Cardboard Tube (you can also use a paper towel tube)
  • Craft Paint or Spray Paint (if your box needs to be painted)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Glue Brush
  • Double Sided Tape, optional
  • Pen or Markers
  • Ribbon, optional

Steps:

Gather your supplies and make sure your work surface is clean.

This project can be messy, so consider laying a tarp down to cover your work area.

Paint or spray paint your box or tube.

Be sure to read all the instructions on your craft paint or spray paint container, paint in a well-ventilated area and allow plenty of drying time between coats.

Once your box or tube is completely dry, use glue and a glue brush to apply your paper medium of choice.

I used star napkins for the box and lids.

And star scrapbook paper for the DIY wish tube.

Keep in mind, if you’re using napkins you’ll need to separate the layers as most napkins are 2 or 3 ply.

I applied one coat of glue to get the napkin to stick to the box.

Then used another goat of glue as a top coat.

Napkins are delicate like tissue paper, so be careful as you’re applying the glue top coat.

Decoupage is one of those perfectly imperfect techniques.

It’s totally fine if you’re DIY affirmation, prayer or wish box comes out a little wrinkled.

Another thing to note is that I had to use both double sided tape and glue to get the scrapbook paper to stick to the tube.

Once you have the paper secured to the tube, you’ll need to add glue around the inside of the opening.

Twist a small piece of napkin remnant.

Secure the napkin remnants inside one end of the tube until the hole is completely covered.

Next, using caution and care as scissors will be sharp, cut scrapbook paper into strips.

Keep in mind, you’re going to write a note on each strip so don’t make them too small or narrow.

Finally, add your messages of encouragement, words of affirmation, daily quotes, prayers or wishes to the box or tube.

Once you’ve finished adding notes, treats or sentimental items to the tube, repeat the process shared above to close the other end up.

Enjoy or gift!
