From the Front Porch: The Comfort and Joy Edition
The day after Hurricane Helene hit my hometown, I was in the front yard at Loblolly hauling debris to the road with several other family members.
It was a symphony of sounds as a professional crew tried to figure out the best way to remove the tree from the roof, and my Dad directed our debris piles all while generators, chainsaws and heavy equipment buzzed from one end of the neighborhood to the other.
I was so caught up in the task at hand, I didn’t even notice that one of my young cousins had quietly started raking alongside several other family members.
When my Dad realized she was there he called her name and said, “Is everything ok? I didn’t hear you come up and you haven’t said anything since you’ve been here,” to which my cousin replied, “This place is a mess, it didn’t seem like the time for small talk,” which made my Dad burst into laughter.
While picking up a rake and getting to work without a lot of fuss might seem like a small thing to do, it’s been those acts of kindness that have made the biggest difference.
The words of encouragement, nourishing meals, extra supplies, provisions, ice, the phone calls that start with, “We have water if you need a hot shower,” the text messages that say, “I’ll be there at 7:30 to help,” and the unexpected glimmers of hope we’ve experienced along the way.
I know it can seem overwhelming at times to know where to start or how to help.
Sometimes, it can even feel like what we have to offer is not enough.
But rest assured you have important gifts to give and each one no matter how big or small is important.
It might be picking up a rake or a shovel to help clear debris, supporting a small business based in one of the affected areas, taking a meal to a loved one, babysitting, pet walking, shopping for groceries, donating to your favorite cause, lighting a candle or lifting up a family in prayer.
Because comfort and joy shouldn’t just be reserved for the holidays when we can give each other those gifts today.
Sending so much love to my fellow Floridians in the path of the Hurricane Milton and to those still recovering from Hurricane Helene.

Such a sweet post! Seeing people come together in the face of trouble or disaster is encouraging. Praying for you and your family!!!
Hoping y’all survived Milton and no trees fell on any family structures. Thank you for all the links and recommendations. I love that your cousin quietly picked up a rake. 🤎🧡🤎
Coco
Thank you for sharing my foraged floral arrangement! I loved your cigar box makeover and I’m planning to share it on Sunday.
Cocoa, I am so sorry I had no idea that you suffered hurricane Helen damage. I hope that it is all fixable and that you did not loose anything sentimental or more importantly anyone that you love. Storms are so scary and they are no joke, even the “little ones” cause a lot of damage.
Thankfully you are surrounded by family and friends that can offer support and loving helping hand.
Thank you for sharing my little cakes, they are scrumptious and so easy to make.
I am off to check your other links.
Take care of yourself and I hope that you will be back to normal at your house very soon. You are in my prayers.
I am sorry you are dealing with this, these storms are truly devastating. I lived through Sandy and it was not fun. We did not have a lot damage though there was some. But we did not have power for 2 weeks and it as November so it was cold. Ugh not fun.
But on the bright side I am loving all this wonderful inspiration. And your disaster kit looked spot on!
Allie
Coco, my heart just breaks for everyone dealing with all the cleanup and aftermath of these destructive storms. It is so sad! Sending lots of love and hugs to you and your family!
Thanks for your encouraging words! These hurricanes have taken a toll on so many! I hope the clean-up and restoration in your area is going well! We are supposed to have minor damage to the exterior of our house fixed today! Can’t wait to explore your links! Have a great week!
