Quick and Easy Project Ideas with Jute and Rope

We’re sharing quick and easy project ideas with jute and rope as we team up with some of our favorite creative ladies for the Handcrafted Society Blog Hop.

Yesterday, the littles went back to school, and it made me realize how much I truly love this time of year.

I love hearing how the first day went, watching the outfits come together and picking up fresh school supplies.

I love sitting down with my paper calendar and adding exciting events to our family command center all while planning projects for the upcoming season.

This month’s theme for the Handcrafted Society is project ideas with jute and rope.

So, I thought it would be fun to make tassels to celebrate all things back-to-school!

Tassels are really easy to make because they can be used in so many different ways.

Two of my favorite ways are placed on Days of the Week tags to help keep outfits organized and added as an elegant embellishment on French Country inspired bookmarks.

  • Wooden Bookmarks (this kit comes with bookmarks and premade tassels in a variety of colored rope)
  • Jute Tassels (great if you don’t have time to make your own. The ones pictured above are long so be sure to keep the length of your project in mind)
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Wax, optional (a variety of colors to choose from)
  • Wax Seal Stamp, optional (mine is a custom stamp but I also love this gorgeous bee and these wax seal stickers are beautiful too)
  • Embellishments, optional (stickers, scrapbook paper, gems, etc.)
  • Computer, Printer, Printer Paper, Scissors, Graphite Pencil, Ball Point Pen, Paint Pen or Marker (if you want to use the easy transfer method for the Day of the Week Tags)

How to Make a Tassel from Jute or Rope…

  • Wrap several strands of jute or rope loosely around your fingers.
  • Add a loop to the top to make the tassel easy to hang.
  • Wrap a single strand of jute or rope just below the top of the folds multiple times then knot to secure.
  • Finally, use caution and care as scissors will be sharp to cut the bottom of the gathered strands.

Days of the Week Tag Steps…

Paint your wooden bookmark in the color of your choice and allow the paint to dry completely.

Next, use your computer and printer to print out the days of the week.

We created these in Word.

Cut around each word using caution and care as scissors will be sharp.

Shade the back of each day of the week with a graphite pencil.

Flip the day of the week back over and carefully place it on the bookmark.

Use a ballpoint pen to trace around each letter.

Then carefully lift the paper.

You should see the outline of your day of the week.

Fill in the letters using a paint pen or marker.

Allow the paint or ink to dry completely.

Next, thread a jute or colored rope tassel in the hole at the top of your bookmark.

Consider using a different colored rope tassel for each day of the week to help make getting ready even easier!

Finally, hang around the neck of a hanger to help keep your outfits organized all week!

French Country Inspired Bookmarks…

If you don’t need to keep your clothes organized throughout the week, you can give the wooden bookmarks shared above a relaxed French Country feel.

Simply, paint your bookmark and allow it to dry completely.

Then using caution and care as wax will be hot, drip wax onto the bookmark.

Place your seal in the middle of the melted wax and press down.

Allow the wax to cool completely.

Thread a jute or rope tassel through the hole in the top of the bookmark and enjoy!
