From the Front Porch: Festive Easter Ideas
Recently, I was on the dance floor singing Whitney Houston with several of my cousins.
The minute the song started playing, we got excited because it could have easily been one of the soundtracks of our childhood.
In those days, we would roll the windows down and turn the music up as loud as our moms would let us.
This time, though, we were at a wedding reception under giant chandeliers dripping with crystals, and tables layered with lamps, greenery, and white roses.
As the lights started to dim, I stopped to take it all in.
The littles were waving noodle like sticks filled with rainbow-colored lights in the air. My parents, aunts, and uncles were catching up with old friends they hadn’t seen in a while. The bride’s parents caught a quick kiss and a long hug in a quiet corner, and several of my cousins had kicked off their shoes as the DJ moved from Whitney Houston to Bruno Mars to the Spice Girls and beyond.
Truly, it was such a gift to see everyone so happy.
In an instant, the last two years washed over me all at once.
I thought about the ones who weren’t there to celebrate with us, the breast cancer treatments we rallied my aunt through, the quiet health battle my mom faced, cleaning up and rebuilding multiple properties from tropical storms, hurricanes, and floods, and other things too private to share.
I used to think about seasons as months on a calendar.
But as I’ve gotten older, I realize that seasons are nothing more than moments of time brought together to teach us something important.
Sometimes, we understand the reason for the lesson right away.
Other times, we reach a point of surrender, knowing we might not ever understand why something happened the way it happened.
As we prepare to enter a season of renewal, I encourage you to shake off the last traces of winter’s heaviness and allow yourself to be inspired by the first buds and fresh green leaves of spring.
For they serve as a reminder that even after a hard season, beautiful things are on the way and love still remains.
