DIY Pink Milk Glass Inspired Plates

We’re sharing how to make DIY pink milk glass inspired plates and exploring other glass project ideas as we join the fabulous ladies of the Handcrafted Society today.

This month’s theme is glass and I’m excited for you to discover these unique and creative DIYs.

When it comes to buying antique or vintage pieces there’s nothing like the real deal.

But sometimes finding an authentic piece feels next to impossible because you might not live in an area with an antique store, or the shipping costs of a particular item puts it out of reach of your budget.

Don’t let that hold you back though.

The beauty of these challenges is that we can get creative and make our own version.

Several years ago, my Mom and I found a set of 5 glass plates at a thrift store.

They were lightweight which means they were new and not valuable.

But the design was definitely inspired by antique raised pattern glass plates and I immediately fell in love with their beautiful design.

What I really wanted to find that day was authentic pink milk glass plates.

But they’ve eluded me for years.

So, I finally decided to DIY my own set until I find the real deal.

Here’s a look at DIY pink milk glass plates and several other glass project ideas from the ladies of the Handcrafted Society.

How to Create DIY Pink Milk Glass Inspired Plates…

DIY Pink Milk Glass Plate Supplies:

  • Glass Plates
  • Warm Soapy Water
  • Small Brush
  • Lint Free Towel
  • Spray Paint Formulated for Glass
  • Protective Wear
  • Cardboard Box

DIY Pink Milk Glass Plate Steps:

Gather your supplies and make sure your glass plates are clean and free from dirt and debris.

We washed these plates with warm soapy water and gently scrubbed the raised pattern areas with a small brush.

Then I wiped the plates dry with a lint free towel.

Given raised pattern glass has lots of nooks and crannies make sure your plates are completely dry before you move onto the next step.

Once your plates are clean and dry, spray paint each plate individually in a well-ventilated area outside, wearing proper protective gear and following the directions on the back of your spray paint can.

Place each plate face down inside your cardboard box one at a time.

Then spray several thin coats of paint on the plates, allowing for plenty of drying time between each coat.

This is after two coats of paint.

Be sure to protect and cover the tops of each glass plate so that no spray paint or over spray gets on top of the glass plate.

These DIY pink milk glass plates are for decorative use only as they are NOT food safe.

Once your DIY pink milk glass plates are completely dry (I used 3 coats of paint and waited 24 hours before handling these) you can use them in vignettes around the house, on a bookcase or plate wall… truly, there are so many possibilities to explore.

Keep in mind, the painted raised pattern could scratch so be sure to move the plates with care.

My Mom and aunts keep their dining room tables set year-round.

It’s such an easy way to display some of their favorite dishes.

So, I created this simple place setting to see how these DIY pink milk glass plates would look with other dishes.

Again, the pink ones are not food safe, but they’re pretty layered together as a display.

All in all, I’m excited about the way these DIY pink milk glass plates came together, and I hope you enjoy making them too!
