From the Front Porch: Red, White and You Summer Reset Edition
Happy Thursday from the front porch beautiful friends and welcome to the Red, White, and You Summer Reset Edition.
I hope your season is off to a fabulous start and you’re looking forward to all the good things July has to offer.
We’ve been leaning into the sweet rhythms of summer, and it’s been the biggest blessing.
While the days haven’t all been perfect, it’s been amazing to simply use this summer sabbatical to concentrate on the health and wellness issues I’ve put on the back burner for far too long.
Earlier this week, my watch started vibrating after finishing a long walk and I knew instantly it was because I had finally reached a workout goal I had set at the beginning of the month.
As the medal danced around my watch face, I couldn’t help but get excited, because it truly felt like an accomplishment.
You see, for nearly two years, I convinced myself I couldn’t work out in the mornings because the treadmill which I prefer to use was in Piper’s room.
While Piper is an absolute delight, she’s also a 3-year-old wild lady terrier that doesn’t nap much during the day.
So, I’m very careful about the time she wakes up because I don’t get a lot of quiet time or free time once she’s awake.
Month after month, I’d start my mornings trying rebounding routines on YouTube, slipping in and out of yoga practices, or riding the stationary bike pretending I was on the backroads in Paris.
But I just could not for the life of me make myself stick to a consistent workout routine no matter how hard I tried.
It was so frustrating I finally just gave up completely.
Shortly before my health and wellness journey began, I got on the scales and realized I was still 11 pounds over my pre Covid weight.
Even though I knew part of the weight gain was due to the medications I was on while being treated for Covid and Strep, it was nevertheless disappointing.
And seeing those numbers was tough because it meant I needed to lose 39 pounds to be at my healthiest weight not the 29 pounds I had mentally prepared myself for.
Truth be told, I was this close to beating myself up for not addressing the issue sooner.
As I’ve shared many times this year though, I’ve been making a concerted effort to turn challenges into invitations.
So, I started troubleshooting ways to walk each day without using the treadmill or waking up Piper.
The solution wound up to be an embarrassingly easy one and I’m already down 6 pounds.
But the whole experience taught me a very important lesson.
When we truly want something, no matter what it is, we will find a way to figure it out and make it happen.
One of my favorite quotes from best selling author Robin Sharma is this, “What you focus on grows, what you think about expands, and what you dwell upon determines your destiny.”
The journey of self-discovery and change doesn’t happen overnight.
It happens one choice at a time, one moment of clarity at a time, one action step at a time, and one act of kindness and grace at a time.
Always remember, you are worth the investment no matter how long it takes.
And I’ll be here cheering you on.

Good morning Coco,
I love from the Front Porch. I always make myself a hot chocolate and take my time reading this post. I click back and forth to links, book mark articles and enjoy all that you put into this post and page.
I did hot yoga 6 days a week for 6 years, then we moved and for the last 2 years I have hard a hard time finding my “exercise.” I haven’t found a studio that I like as much as my old one, and much like you have been struggling. Then something “clicked” and I joined a new gym and my only objective it to get their daily.
Good luck with the house and your studies.
THANK YOU for being an inspiration!
I’m so curious what your daily workout routine includes. I am down about 5 pounds, but I still have 35 to make my goal. Since I retired last week, I’m going to kick it into gear!😀
Coco,
I’m so glad you gave yourself permission to take time off. I’m hoping to let the blog take care of itself for at least the week of the 4th. Thank you for sharing my Dollar tree pillow.
Thank you so much for sharing your healthy shopping list ideas. I am already using a few of these items and definitely want to check out even more of them. Also, great job on achieving your fitness goal, keep up the great work!!
I love this, CoCo! It’s so good to hear from you but also to know that you are taking care of yourself this summer. Blessings to you!
