13 Easy Summer to Fall Decorating Ideas

Today, we’re sharing 13 easy Summer to Fall decorating ideas as we transition from one season to the next with some of our favorite bloggers as part of the Transitioning from Summer to Fall Blog Hop.

As always, a special shout out to the constantly creative, Amber of Follow the Yellow Brick Home, for putting our blog hops together.

If you’re coming over from The Painted Hinge, welcome, we’re glad to have you here.

Michelle has such a knack for putting things together.  I love her farmhouse style so much and I know you will too!

Transitioning your home décor from summer to fall can definitely be tricky.  Especially, if you live in a seasonally warm climate like we do.  Most of the time, I love living on this tiny Florida island.

But I gotta tell ya, I miss the living where the seasons change during Fall the most.  Fall is one of our favorite seasons of the entire year. We know it is for so many of you too.

If you live in a warm-weather state or kick off your Fall season with a hurricane or a tropical storm, don’t despair! There are plenty of things we can do to celebrate Fall. Even if it hardly feels like Fall at all outside.

Here’s a look at 13 Easy Summer to Fall Decorating Ideas that will make the transition from Summer to Fall decorating at breeze…

Clean and Declutter

There is nothing like starting a fresh new season with a clean and blank slate.

Fall is a great time to deep clean and declutter. Believe me, we all have things we’re holding onto that are no longer serving the needs of our families or our homes.

This year let’s commit to cleaning and decluttering early so we can make more room to enjoy the things we love most.

You can find out more about our 52 Weeks to a Simplified and Organized Home Challenge here.

Welcome Guests into Your Home with a Beautiful Fall Porch

One of the easiest ways to incorporate easy Summer to Fall decorating ideas is by adding pops of colors and flowers to your front porch. It doesn’t have to be anything grand at all, but it should be intentional.

Take a few minutes to decide how you want to welcome guests into your home this season.  It’s one of the first areas that your guests will see when they arrive and one of the last areas they’ll see when they depart.

Being intentional with your front door and porch area is all about making a good first impression.  You can find out how we celebrate Fall on the front porch here.

Add Soft Whites or Pops of Fall Color to Your Home Décor

By the time we get home from work, we want a place that feels cozy and relaxing.  For this reason, neutrals are totally our jam.  We love to warm up our current color palette of soft whites, grays, and camels with pops of Fall color.

You can easily transition your home from Summer to Fall by adding in gorgeous Fall colors including cinnamon, saffron, plum, burnt sienna, pumpkin, sage, teal, taupe, navy, stormy gray, green apple, caramel, and ivory.

Speaking of ivory, you find how out how we made this vintage-inspired monogrammed no-sew pillow cover here.

Incorporate Layers of Texture

Incorporating layers of texture into your fall decorating ideas can be as simple as adding textured pillows to your bed, baskets to your vignettes, or new rugs to your favorite living spaces.

We frequently use indoor/outdoor rugs in our home because they’re pet friendly and easy to clean.  But we also love incorporating wicker furniture into our indoor and outdoor dining areas too.

Texture is an easy to way add weight and balance to a specific space and will often take a basic room from ordinary to extraordinary.

You can find out how to make this stacked pumpkin topiary here.

Include Fall Flowers and Natural Elements

Mums are one of my favorite flowers because no matter what state we lived in my Mom always made sure to have them in our home and on our porches during the Fall season.

Fall flowers and natural elements like branches or foliage from the yard can easily be incorporated into your Fall decorating ideas.

In addition to mums, you can also try other Fall floral favorites such as goldenrod, a variety of daisies, bellflower, heather, celosia, pansies, sedum, and sage.

Update Your Pillows with Fall Fabrics

Updating your pillows for Fall is an easy and inexpensive way to decorate and transition from Summer to Fall.

Consider using plaids, tweed, lush velvet, wool, cashmere, cable knit, flannel, corduroy, leather and suede to effortlessly add both Fall color and texture to your bedroom, living room and family seating areas.

We made this no-sew varsity letter pillow (seen above) to use on our fall front porch tour and it was super simple.

Decorate Inside and Out with Fall Wreaths

Decorating inside and outside the house with a Fall wreath couldn’t be easier!

Fall wreaths usually come pre-made with a specific Fall color palette. So, if you’re struggling to decide what colors you want to decorate with this year, choose the colors on your favorite Fall wreath.

We created this simple outdoor dessert buffet based on the colors found in our Fall wreath.

Set a Beautiful Tablescape

It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting outside on the back patio or at the big dining table, gathering around a beautiful tablescape to enjoy a meal with family and friends will always be time well spent.

The secret to setting a gorgeous Fall tablescape starts with layering table linens, creating a simple seasonal centerpiece, and adding your best dishes.

Create a Seasonal Centerpiece

When it comes to creating a Fall centerpiece, we say, make it as easy on yourself as possible.

Consider highlighting Fall foliage and seasonal blooms or shopping the produce aisle for edible decorations. Use garlands or greenery picks from the floral department from your local craft supply store.

Don’t forget about using creative containers that are low such a dough bowls, weathered boxes, pieces of ironstone, or vintage mason jars to help create a seasonal centerpiece.

Use Seasonal Scents Around the House

Imagine opening the front door and enjoying the intoxicating scent of a pumpkin spice latte, warm apples, and cinnamon, sweet orange and cloves or pear and ginger.

We love those fragrances because they remind us of Fall.

Creating seasonal scents for your home doesn’t have to be complicated at all, you guys! You can spend an afternoon pouring your own candles, making a simmer pot, crafting a diffuser blend with essential oils, and even making cinnamon scented pine cones.

Craft Fresh Fall Décor

If you’re short on storage space, you might not think about crafting Fall décor. But some of our favorite projects have been easily crafted in an afternoon.

Taking time to craft everything from a vintage apple-picking sign or craft paper banner to learning how to make your own heirloom pumpkins allows you to be as creative as you want to be.  It also lets you easily customize your Fall decorating ideas with the current color palette of your home.

Create Fall Vignettes

I totally get sometimes creating a vignette might seem kind of overwhelming at first. Especially if you’ve never tried to make one before.  Don’t let that hold you back from trying though!

Vignettes are another simple way to decorate for Fall.  They allow you to be creative with seasonal décor, to layer in texture and add fun pops of Fall color as well.

Consider using pumpkins and gourds, natural elements like branches or leaves, candles, pieces from your favorite transferware collection, weathered books, tarnished silver, amber bottles, and seasonal art.

We created this Fall vignette in 5 minutes and you can too!

Create a Cider Bar or an Indoor Drink Station

Fall drinks are not just about pumpkin spice lattes! Pear and apple ciders are both great alternatives for an indoor drink station if you don’t enjoy seasonal coffee drinks.

Creating a cider bar or an indoor drink station can easily be stocked with items from the grocery store.  Consider using flavored coffee, teas, cocoas, and ciders paired with Fall inspired flavored syrups.  Then garnish with simple cinnamon sticks, marshmallows or chocolate spoons!

Fall is all about creating special moments when and where you can! No matter how the weather feels outside or how slowly a hurricane is crawling up the coast! There is always something we can celebrate about the upcoming season.

I hope these 13 Easy Summer to Fall Decorating Ideas will help you begin creating a warm and inviting home this Fall.

    1. Thank you so much, Marty! I can take credit for the porch because I’ve always dreamed of having a big Southern porch but the bookcase styling is all due to my talented Mom. I just get out of her way and let her do her thing 🙂 Sending you hugs for a happy Fall, CoCo

    1. You’re so cute, Cindy! If you only knew how much dog hair I had to clean up every day ha ha. It’s like how can this dog still even have hair! 4. I love so much in this post.

I love the pillow and am planning to embroider a C to make a pillow for the guest room bed, a tower of pumpkins will appear in my decor, but the urn I have is smaller so it won’t be quite so tall and I will incorporate some of your ideas on our garden bench.

    1. That’s so sweet of you to say, Carol, thank you! The urn with the stacked pumpkins has been moved all over the house 🙂 I found it for $20 at a thrift store and it was all cracked and chippy but I knew it needed to come home with me no matter what. Sending you hugs for a happy fall, CoCo

  5. Love your fall tour, CoCo! The neutrals with the greenery is just lovely, and your added textures are perfect. The ‘field’ of mums on your porch is so welcoming, too! (Never thought I would be a mum lover, but I am!)

    1. I never thought of it as a field of mums but then I looked at the picture again and that’s exactly what it looks like, Julie 🙂 Mums are so sentimental to us. No matter what house we were living in or what state we were living in, thanks to my Dad’s military career, my Mom always made sure we had lots of mums around the house during the Fall season. Even now, if you visited my parent’s house or one of my sisters’ houses any time during Fall, you’ll find lots of mums. Sending you hugs, CoCo

  6. CoCo, what I love best about your decor (and I really love it all) is your use of calm ivory. It’s so beautiful. That pumpkin topiary with the eucalyptus is gorgeous. And your tablescape vignette of mums with the Queen Mum? Priceless. Thanks for the list of inspirational ideas. Happy September.I hope you’re staying safe in Dorian’s path.

    1. You’re so sweet, Rita, thank you. Our lives outside of these walls can be very hectic. So, by the time I get home we just need an “all is calm” kind of feeling which for us means a lot of creamy whites like ivory and other neutrals. We love Fall and we’re always looking for ways to extend the season even though sometimes we’re still wearing flip flops and shorts well into November because of the Florida heat:) Thankfully, our home was spared during Dorian. While we’ll have tree debris to clean up around the property tomorrow and it’s still very windy and wet here, there was no flooding like we experienced during Hurricanes Matthew and Irma. We definitely feel blessed. Thanks so much for thinking of us, we appreciate you! Hugs, CoCo

  7. I always love visiting your home Coco. You have such wonderful early fall touches. The PIE pillow is just darling!

    1. Thank you bunches, Laura, I really appreciate your sweet words! Hugs and happy fall, CoCo

  8. You have so many creative ideas and I love the way you have decorated your home! I also agree about the cleaning and decluttering. I think I do just as much organizing in September as I do in January. It just feels right to be fresh for the new season. I really enjoyed seeing your beautiful home! Pinning!
    Shelley

    1. Shelley, I’m so with you on the decluttering and cleaning in January and September. I don’t know what it is that makes Fall feel like a fresh start but I’m all about it too. Cleaning and decluttering in September definitely makes it easier when you’re hosting guests for the holidays and of course when Santa brings all those toys 🙂 Hugs, CoCo

  9. It’s great to see all these great ideas for Fall Coco. I feel like I do the same thing every year. Praying for you and your family during Dorian

    1. Speak to my heart, Sarah, I totally get it! We don’t have a lot of extra storage space in the house or attic so I can definitely relate. Adding different color flowers, table linens and ribbon to basic everyday tablescapes and even old wreaths helps though so you might want to try it. Let us know how it goes, CoCo

  10. I am really loving all of your tips and accompanying photos. I transition much the same as you–gradual changes. I am a super big fan of mums! I can’t wait to get going!

    1. Thank you Jane! We don’t have a lot of extra storage space at our house so we’re constantly looking for fresh ways to use our old decorations. That said, we always buy fresh mums no matter what 🙂 Now that Dorian is on her way out of Florida, I’m hoping we can fill up our cars with lots of mums this weekend. Hope everything is going well with you! Sending you hugs, CoCo

  11. CoCo,
You have such lovely photos to illustrate each of your fall decorating ideas! I pinned several to my Fall Pinterest board. Your front porch decked out with all the mums is so inviting and welcoming for fall. I love your stacked pumpkins in the black swirly pedestal urn. I need to start looking for mums for my front entry and porch, but it is still so hot here.

    Stay safe, my Florida friend,

    Judith

    1. I really appreciate it, Judith, thank you! We love Fall so we’re always looking for all kinds of ways to make it last even the the heat and the humidity are both totally crazy. I saw mums at both Home Depot and Lowes while we were picking up hurricane supplies. The mums didn’t have very many blooms on them yet so you might want to wait just a little bit longer before you buy them. That way you won’t have to baby them as much. We bought some early last year and the slugs seemed to love them. Sending you big hugs for a happy Fall, CoCo

  12. Every single picture in this post was so much enjoyed by me! You have great ideas and I always enjoy how you beautifully style every spot that you share in your home. I hope that you stay safe in the hurricane and that your home has no damage.

    1. I appreciate your kinds words, Paula, thank you! Fall is our favorite season of the entire year so we try to live it up even in the heat and humidity 🙂 It’s still pretty windy and wet here and we’ll have a lot of yard debris to clean up tomorrow but thankfully nothing major. Our property flooded during both Hurricanes Matthew and Irma so this little bit of extra work feels like a huge gift. Thanks so much for thinking of us. Hugs, CoCo

  13. Wow, CoCo! This post is packed full of great ideas for fall! I need to come back and explore all the great tutorials you linked to in here. Everything looks so beautiful and ready to embrace the season. I’m like you…I miss having a REAL fall season now that I live in Texas. I hope you’re staying out of harm’s way with the hurricane. Hugs to you. -Crissy

    1. Thank you bunches, Crissy! We head up to the cabin whenever we can during the Fall season and while it helps with the “all things Fall itch” there’s really nothing like waking up to cable knit sweaters and crunching through Fall leaves 🙂 We really appreciate your sweet thoughts on Hurricane Dorian. It’s been quite a roller coaster this week but thankfully all of our services have been fully restored. Hugs and happy Fall, CoCo

  14. Jann Olson says:

It’s all just stunning! I am a color girl, but leave seeing homes filled with neutral. Your porch is definitely a statement of beauty!
    hugs,
    Jann

    1. I really appreciate it, Jann, thank you so much! Hugs, CoCo

  15. Coco, so many great ideas here. You are so way ahead of the fall decorating schedule, which means you have plenty of time to enjoy all your pretty vignettes. Love the topiary (Pinned) and the soft textures. Awesome inspiration for us all.

  16. Love love all your great ideas to head into Fall, now all I want to do is go out and find a big ol bunch of mums!!!

    1. You’re sweet, Debra, thank you! We’re huge fans of mums thanks to my sweet Mom who always made sure we had lots of mums around the house and on the porches no matter where we lived. Loading our cars with them is something we look forward to every year. Sending you hugs for a happy week, CoCo

  17. Wow CoCo, I had to read your page twice. You had a lot of great tips and beautiful décor pieces in your home. I think your home looks and feels cozy and warm for the new coming season.

    1. I really appreciate that so much Terrie! I loved your tip about using floral picks instead of using floral bushes in your post. I tried that myself this year and you’re right it makes such a big difference. Hugs, CoCo

  18. Coco, you shared so many charming ideas, it is hard to name a favorite! I do love your pie pillow! Happy almost fall! Blessings, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction

  19. Your photos just really inspire me. I really love the white pumpkins in the topiary, but everything else is just as gorgeous. Happy early fall, CoCo!

    1. Thank you so much Carol! That topiary was super easy to make. You’re really talented so I’m sure you could recreate it at your house in no time! Hugs, CoCo

  20. I love seeing the calm, hushed tones of your beautiful home, Coco. I especially love how you styled your bookcase! Hope you and yours are all safe from the hurricane!

    1. I appreciate it, Lora, thank you! Our services have been restored and we were able to take the hurricane shutters down yesterday. We had no significant flooding or trees down like we had with Hurricanes Matthew and Irma which is such a blessing. We love calm colors in every season because our lives can definitely get busy. I’ll let my parents know you like the bookcases. My Dad built them, I painted them and my Mom styled them so it was an all hands on deck family affair 🙂 Hope you’ve had a happy week, CoCo

  21. I must say CoCo, I always have the best time pinning your fabulous ideas. I want to make a vignette with a cloche this fall. It will be fun deciding what to include and I love the idea of filling it with mini pumpkins. Thank you for all the inspiration friend! Hugs!!

    1. You’re making me melt Michelle, thank you! I feel the same way about your posts and decorating ideas. It’s so much fun to get lost down the rabbit hole of your blog and breath taking pictures. We’re always excited about Fall but especially this season in particular. There are so many things to be grateful for which feels like the perfect time to celebrate. Sending you hugs for a happy week, CoCo

  22. Coco this is all absolutely stunning! I am always blown away by your posts and your decor. Every time you show your home I always want to pin away every image! Your tablescape is so beautiful with the mums as a centerpiece and brown transferware. If I get started on your outdoor spaces and bookcase styling I will be here all day!

I am so glad you are safe!

Thank you so much for sharing these gorgeous images and great fall decorating ideas.

    Happy almost fall, dear friend!

    1. I so appreciate your sweet comments, Amber, and how you always go the extra mile to make sure these blog hops are a success. There is no doubt in my mind that you make them extra special. I was thinking about you guys during the storm as I know you had some exciting travel planned. Even though we’re in the middle of peak hurricane season we’re still hoping to celebrate every ounce of Fall we possibly can. We have so many things to be thankful for this year. Big hugs, CoCo

  23. CoCo,,
Your home is one of my favorite online. I love your soft vintage style…its relaxed, cozy, sophisticated and not overdone. I’m really trying to purge stuff. I find that the older I get the less I want to deal with!

    1. I really appreciate your sweet words, Christy, thank you! I so with you on the purging. I don’t think I’ll ever be a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination but every time we have to evacuate for a hurricane it makes me wonder how much of this stuff I really need 🙂 Sending you lots of hugs and prayers that your beach house is ok and hurricane season will be over soon, CoCo

  24. I am right there with you, wishing there was a little more color in the leaves here in Florida. I love all of your tips and ideas, and your MUMS!! They are all so beautiful! I look forward to adding them to my porch in the coming weeks! Your home looks so welcoming as the seasons transition!

    1. I really appreciate it Chloe, thank you so much! I think the reason I’m so obsessed with mums each year is because the leaves hardly ever change in Florida. It’s like my consolation prize ha ha. Sending you big hugs and thank yous for your sweet words, CoCo

  25. Julie Briones says:

Girl… you are amazing… I’ve visited all three posts from Tuesday Turn About this week, and I’m just amazing! So pretty!

    1. You are too sweet, Julie, thank you! My bestie and TCG website administrator fell last year in late October and I was her caregiver for months as she navigated life in a wheelchair. Now that she’s better we’re doing everything we can think of to celebrate all the seasons we missed to the fullest. There are so many things to be grateful for this year! Hugs, CoCo
